To This Day - Metal Slug Was Released By Neo Geo
The most exciting part of my childhood in terms of games is the arcade. Arcade is my first love in gaming. Since I was not able to own my console during my childhood, arcade is my first taste of gaming. I am a fan of fighting games. I played Mortal Kombat, Marvel Superheroes and Street Fighter. Though RPG games were also exciting, it is just that I know for myself that I will never finish the game, which is why I turn to Fighting games. At least the fighting games I have a chance to finish, in RPG I lost hope. There is one arcade game that I truly enjoy even though I can't finish it. That is Metal Slug.
Another blast from the past post, and we are still in Retro Gaming fever and I really want to highlight this game, Metal Slug. To this day May 24 it was released by Neo Geo. It is a RPG game where you should defeat everything in your path. No other ifs no other buts, but whoever it is in your path, literally you should obliterate. No military briefing kill or be killed and get out.
Metal Slug is a simple game, to kill or to be killed. Generally it is an RPG game wherein you will play the role of a soldier taking on orders. The comic graphics really captured my attention in this game. To be honest the whole composition of the graphics and the theme really coincides with each other. Even though the graphics are a bit rough, the theme is on the chaos side of the sphere so it is still an acceptable fusion. To be honest the graphics are very detailed to better describe the theme. It is of military design so the dents, the tear and smudges of the helicopters and tanks are in detail. Though the movement is a bit slapstick, it neutralizes the heavy atmosphere of a military themed game.
Do not get me wrong, this game is not easy. Even Stage 1 it requires some serious precision to be able to move forward without sparing a life. The game itself is repetitive in the mechanics. Kill all those in your path, and kill the boss. It may be simple to think about it but the stage itself is not straightforward. The stage can be a slope or a climbing platform. Though the stage will not make your life miserable further, the stage is still on the side of the AI. I am not totally sure if only Metal Slug pulls up a melee weapon whenever the target is near. I am pretty much sure that if an arcade game has guns, the character will not pull a knife whenever a target is near, it will just keep on firing. Metal Slug recognizes the range of the target that is why whenever a target is nearby it pulls out a knife, just like that. Let me know in the comments if you know a game that has the same age of Metal Slug that recognizes the range of the target. This kind of detail should absolutely be recognized that the dev team of Neo Geo really has attention to detail.
Overall Metal Slug is an equally entertaining game. It is an absolute classic. The craziness on how the character moves and antics, is absolutely memorable. Metal Slug is truly a keeper, I acknowledge the wits of the devs and graphics department on this game. That is why it went on to more versions or installments of the game. There is a lot more to Metal Slug than just a shooting game or a platform game. It shapes our childhood and sometimes we just want simple simple games like Metal Slug.
