Marvel Future Fight Review - The Only Non-Gatcha Game That Works

It has a Gatcha mechanism to it but it is not entirely a Gatcha games and the game still stands going to 7th anniversary and that is no joke.

The game started with only Level 60 characters then advanced it to Tier-2 now they have Tier-3 and Transcended characters with a different twist with its ultimate skill.

Marvel Future Fight launched in 2015 by Netmarble and the game is running for 6th year on mobile going to 7th year this April. It has been a roller coaster ride as the game introduces new mechanics to upgrade your individual heroes and general stats. It is a hero-collecting RPG game that introduces a new kind of game play.

Main Story

Its main story is that Dimensions are opening up and all of the Ghost Riders and Spidermans from another Dimension are going to your dimension. These other versions of your character could be an enemy or an ally.

Back in 2015 it had 3 separate stories, the main S.H.I.E.L.D. storyline and the Asgard one and the one with Captain Marvel that is more focused on space and Thanos.

The length of the S.H.I.E.L.D.-storyline is much longer than others, however the other 2 stories have more challenging enemies. There was Hela and the unlockable Odin.

Evolved Throughout The Years

The mechanics and character build has jumped from zero to hero. The latest uniform designs based from the movie Avengers: Endgame has improved based on the hits that a skill could make. Then the power creep started when Tier-3 was introduced and Galactus as the new Giant Boss Raid. Then Knull in World Boss Legends, started to get a little bit dirty on the Premium Card shenanigans and CTP forging system but the players were able to cope up.

Though that last “Power” update is not too Free-To-Play friendly in all aspects, the game was able to gain popularity to keep afloat because of the Disney+ themed updates.

Started with the Wandavision, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, and The Loki Series that really upgraded Loki to a whole new level.

New uniforms, amazing animations and themed updates can really keep this game alive in the long run? Maybe, maybe not, but one thing is for sure it is slowly going away to be Free-To-Play friendly as it all depends now on the Premium Card System and the CTP farming.

Even if you can farm one to two CTP for a period through Token events and get a guaranteed Premium Card every month through Giant Boss Raid, the requirement to roll the stats you want is still a struggle. The game is not completely Gacha but rerolling has an insane chance to get the stats that help you progress.

The Comics Relevance

The game is also not limited to the MCU and Disney+ series, they pick Marvel Comics themes as well. Xcalibur and House of X themed updates are just some of them.

There is a lot to work on the X-Men rosters, though there is always Jean Grey, but Cable and Gambit with their Tier-3 and Transcended Status, respectively there are still a lot to work on with Professor X, Magneto and the struggling Cyclops. These X-Men leaders have a lot of potential as they are not just leaders, they are powerful mutants on their own merit.

Not every update is a hit! It really took a toll in the No Way Home, where in the update and reworks for Spider-man still did not match the rework of Daredevil in the Defenders Update. This game needs a better free-to-play friendly update for X-Men. Though the best X-Men characters are still free to play, some fans of Professor X just like myself, can’t rely on farming biometrics in the Danger Room alone. Danger Room is also repetitive and can be a sore at times.

With the repetitive animation of the skills and the concerning generosity of the game I am not sure for how long the magic of the MCU will keep them up. The Eternals, Spider-man No Way Home and The Falcon and The Winter Soldier are just some of the not so sterral updates of the game, will the game developers surprise us on the Doctor Strange and Thor franchises?

The life of Free-To-Play games is based on the retention of the players. However Free-To-Play players also need something to hang on to or something that they can actually play. The power creep that the CTP reforging has a huge bump and a huge price to pay.

Though keeping up with the revenue of the actual game and giving the players what they need from the game, is really not an easy task for Netmarble. Though there should be a balance of generosity and players that really give back to the game.

For Free-To-Play players the only investment that you put in the game is your time. Though it can be reduced further to 2 Premium Card Chest in a month or timed event to get more CTP or reduce or increase the chance to get that reforged stats. I am sure Netmarble will not do the latter.

All in all the mechanism of Marvel Future Fight now is working. Though the balance is going to be 60% - 40% of the game in favor of the whales. The game is still good but it is on the brink of the players being fed up with the repetitive grinding with little chance of having a good roll. The growth can be generous at first but it will come to a point that playing alone can be a chore. Watching some whale content can be a double edged sword that it could help you hitting the right stats early on, however,  it can also be frustrating that it would not turn out to be the stats you see as a lot of factors are based on RNG. It is almost impossible to come up with a total copy, as of what you watch on those whale’s accounts.
