Marvel Anime Project - The Wolverine Series: Did Wolverine Get The Girl This Time?

Another X-Men anime but this is a “solo” series from the Wolverine! Part of the Anime x Marvel project is the solo series of the crowd’s favorite mutant The Wolverine. Logan has a solo anime series where he takes us to the story of her beloved Mariko. Though there is a surprise appearance of Cyclops in the series, it is just a small part of their visit to Madripoor.

The series is self titled Wolverine, though the illustration is not similar to the X-Men series, Wolverine here is very lean. In the series it is not explained if the scenario is before and after the X-Men series. Wolverine is the traveling nomad of the X-men,  he is mostly alone and he is usually involved with women with one of those travels if not all. Probably I got used to the connection or the continuity of the story within the Marvel timeline but this is the element that is really a successful formula in every Marvel work. In the comics the story arcs have been the signature story telling of Marvel that resonates even in the MEU. The series and how they managed to connect not just by easter eggs but the whole story itself.

To be honest, starting from episode 3 to 5 it is a bit hard to digest where the story is going but the 6th episode is where the story really unfolds. I am a fan of Omega Red but I felt he became a filler in the series. I am a little bit disappointed with Omega Red’s appearance in the series, though it is really understandable since his obvious nemesis here is Shingen. The author probably wants to inject some classic enemy of Wolverine however they don’t know where to put it in the story.

The series shows the soft spot of Wolverine which is women and it is like a “Taken” scenario here where he climbs up the ranks of a very big syndicate. The syndicate is ironically owned by the father of Mariko, Shingen.

The story is predictable but the twists and turns on the people that he meets along the way are interesting. I mean when you are in the middle of the series it seems that you already know how it will turn out to be. Old partners, relationships go sour, Hitman and Bodyguard relationship, revenge story you know how it goes, however, those cliches seem executed properly when you go towards the story.

Unlike the X-Men series your interest was captured at the beginning of the series and then it unfolds, to be a story of Professor X. In the Wolverine series, the story is pretty stale in the beginning and it became interesting towards the end.

It would be better if the armor of Shingen came from Stark Industries but rather the poison came from A.I.M. which is pretty lame. Though the idea of poison fits to the story since they are a syndicate so poison fits when you are working in the shadows. I guess the A.I.M. part is pretty lame come on, A.I.M. it could be better.

All in all The Wolverine series is not that bad, it could be worse but thankfully it redeemed itself in the end. There are still flaws in the action sequence and come on it is a gangland. How do they manage to have large guillotines set up for people stepping in Madripoor? I guess there is a poor decisions in the concept; it could be more sophisticated. Take that out the story live up to a true Wolverine story arc which made it a beautiful ending. If Cyclops is always right, in the story of Wolverine, Wolverine always does not get the girl.
