Have You Met A Mushishi? The Tale of Two Species

Obviously not.

Mushishi is a fictional job that deals with Mushi which means in the anime a supernatural entity that is invisible to the human eye. In the anime,  Mushi is depicted to be the most primitive form of life.

My mind is already saturated with Hero based anime. Though it is still a popular opinion on patronizing that “hero” themed anime, I get to see a different road on all of these anime. I saw a path where there is no weak protagonist (at first) and eventually discovered that his ancestors or his parents were both amazing at what they do. I really don’t think now that I need something of a nepo-baby like path for our protagonist. It can be like Violet Evergarden, a war machine that tried a peaceful path in life? Or Mushishi.

Mushishi is a fictional supernatural anime series about life forms that are misunderstood called Mushi. They manage to cure unexplainable diseases that are caused by these Mushis.

I discovered this anime in a reel and got curious about it and didn’t stop watching (maybe I paused a few times). Though the protagonist seems like a hero without the cape style, he is not the typical one. He has few words but if it is deemed necessary, he expresses a compassionate friend that would like to help both parties. Not all Mushi are detrimental, Ginko still expresses his utmost compassion for both species.

He carefully put his energy to move forward with the solution, and really gave a good thought about who would cause it and how he can solve or alleviate the condition of the victim. He weighs the root cause if he needs to completely eradicate the mushi or he will just let the mushi leave peacefully and migrate somewhere.

The general feel of the series is very tranquil. It is really relaxing to be honest. How the story unfolds in every series is surreal. I am not denying that there is a drama, whether it is coming from the family or internal conflict of the patient, a kind of drama that is very subtle you will just realize that you are already in the middle of it.

I can’t say its horror though there are mushis that are a little bit scary or the condition of the patient is a little bit gory. Yeah let’s call it horror.

The series is phenomenal, it has a specific target audience but it is worth the watch. It is filled with emotions and compassion that you are not alone in this world. Other species are living among us and whether it is helpful to us or detrimental, sometimes your situation does not give you a lot of options but to pick the best poison that would kill you slowly or ruin you altogether. That’s the hard truth in life, that the quotation no man is an island is a double edge sword.
